There is considerable confusion about compatibility of Spotmatic Motor Drives. Apart from a brief but excellent article (http://www.aohc.it/selart11e.htm) on the subject there is practically no information on how to distinguish between different Motor Drives.
There are two Motor Drives units – MD I & MD II and they can easily be differentiated by the number of coupling contact pins – MD I has three pins while MD II has four. The compatibility of Spotmatic cameras is less straightforward. The only Spotmatic cameras with four contact panels which are fully compatible with MD II are Motor Drive versions of ES and ES II. All other Spotmatic cameras have three contact panels rather than four. However, some of them are compatible with the MD II while others are not. The difference is in the design of the contact panels. MD I has evenly spaced contact panels while MD II has an gap between contact panels to prevent the fourth pin short-circuiting the contacts. The illustrations below demonstrate this.
